# Day 16/34 Sampling Summary

Sampling in APM (Application Performance Management) plays a crucial role in optimizing resources and performance. Here's a breakdown of why sampling is both necessary and when it might not be needed:

#### Why Sampling is Necessary:

1. **Bandwidth Conservation:** Sampling helps save bandwidth by reducing the amount of data transmitted.
2. **Cost Efficiency:** Sampling can lower costs associated with APM, which are often tied to traffic and storage.
3. **Performance Optimization:** By minimizing the data processed, sampling can help reduce performance impacts.

#### When Sampling May Not Be Needed:

1. **Troubleshooting Data:** Full trace data is essential for troubleshooting issues effectively.
2. **Comprehensive Monitoring:** Complete matrix data is required for thorough monitoring.

#### Sampling Solutions:

1. **APM Sampling:** Retains only the most recent trace data, utilizing sampling for older traces.
2. **Head Sampling:** Initiates sampling based on specific triggers, affecting subsequent components.
3. **Tail Sampling:** Makes decisions on sampling based on flow status like errors or timeouts.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://stephen-tsoi.gitbook.io/stephen-tsoi-docs/opentelemetry/from-missing-events-to-complete-visibility-tracing-enterprise-transactions-with-opentelemetry/day-16-34-sampling-summary.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `build a script that syncs our docs to a CMS` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
