# Day 10/34 Logs + Traces Correlation

🔍 Logs vs Traces: How to Troubleshoot Issues More Effectively\
When troubleshooting complex systems, logs and traces each tell part of the story—but neither is complete on its own.

📄 Using Logs to Troubleshoot Issues\
Application logs provide detailed contextual information for debugging. They capture events, data states, and error messages that help engineers understand what happened.

In high‑throughput systems handling hundreds of data flows per second, logs often rely on thread IDs to link related events. However, it quickly becomes difficult to:\
Visualize which logs belong to which data flow\
Understand the end‑to‑end process of a single request\
Isolate issues buried in massive log volumes\
Logs are rich in detail, but weak at showing the big picture.

⏱️ Using Traces to Troubleshoot Issues\
Trace data focuses on performance and timing. By following a trace flow, you can:\
Measure latency across individual components\
Identify where a process slows down or stops\
Understand the timing relationship within the same data flow\
However, traces mainly answer where and how long:\
They don’t explain what exactly was happening\
They lack the business and error context found in logs

🔗 The Real Power: Linking Logs and Traces\
To truly identify the root cause, logs and traces must work together.\
With OpenTelemetry, applications can be configured to:\
Automatically enrich logs with trace ID and span ID\
Correlate logs and traces using a shared context

This enables a powerful workflow:\
✅ Click a span in the APM dashboard\
✅ Jump directly to the corresponding application logs\
✅ See both performance metrics and detailed runtime context

📌 Bottom line:\
Observability is not about choosing logs or traces—it’s about connecting them. Correlated telemetry dramatically reduces troubleshooting time and improves system reliability.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://stephen-tsoi.gitbook.io/stephen-tsoi-docs/opentelemetry/from-missing-events-to-complete-visibility-tracing-enterprise-transactions-with-opentelemetry/day-10-34-logs-+-traces-correlation.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
